Duties Description The Research Scientist (RS) will participate and direct the Birth Defects Research Section within the Bureau of Environmental & Occupational Epidemiology. The incumbent will lead epidemiologic investigations to assess and respond to public health outcomes associated with environmental and occupational exposures, particularly birth defects and stillbirth. The RS will participate in all phases of environmental, occupational, hazard, and/or reproductive epidemiological research and surveillance. They will work both independently and provide technical support to a team of senior scientists and students to help contribute directly towards problem definition, study design, planning, execution, analyses, and interpretation and presentation of results for birth defects and stillbirth research.
Minimum Qualifications Research Scientist 3, Grade 25: a bachelor’s degree in biology, public health, epidemiology, infection control, statistics/biostatistics, biomedical science, environmental health, environmental science, or a related degree*, AND at least four years of relevant post-degree professional research experience in an appropriate field; OR a Master’s degree in one of the above fields, AND at least three years of post-degree professional research experience; OR a Doctoral degree in one of the above fields, AND at least one year of post-degree professional research experience
Research Scientist 4, Grade 27: a bachelor’s degree in biology, public health, epidemiology, infection control, statistics/biostatistics, biomedical science, environmental health, environmental science, or a related degree*, AND at least five years of relevant post-degree professional research experience in an appropriate field; OR a Master’s degree in one of the above fields, AND at least four years of post-degree professional research experience; OR a Doctoral degree in one of the above fields, AND at least two years of post-degree professional research experience
*Related Degrees may include: Medical Anthropology, Psychology, Nutrition, Nursing, Pharmacology, Mathematics, Education, Medical Geography, Sociology, Economics, or other relevant Social Science, or Natural Sciences.
Preferred Qualifications: The preferred candidate will possess a Doctoral degree in a qualifying field and will have at least two years of progressively independent experience in the field of birth defects research and surveillance. They will demonstrate strong methodological and analytical skills with experience in using statistical and analysis software such as Statistical Analysis System (SAS) and R. The preferred candidate will have experience managing and evaluating quality of birth defects surveillance data; analyzing New York State Birth Defects Registry data; maintaining International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10); Business Process Analysis (BPA) coding systems; and developing and managing Institutional Review Board (IRB) protocols. The incumbent will also have experience conducting, publishing, and presenting epidemiologic analyses of birth defects data. The preferred candidate will have experience successfully applying for federal funding for birth defects projects and serving as Principal Investigator on said projects. They will also have experience supervising data managers, medical record abstractors, students, and/or lower-level analysts.

Appointment level maybe made at the Research Scientist 3 or Research Scientist 4 level based on the qualifications of the selected candidate.
