Duties Description Under the direct supervision of the Conservation Operations Supervisor 2, the Service & Repair Mechanic (ME) will be responsible for the following activities:

•Plans, designs, schedules, installs, repairs and rebuilds emergency lighting and audible warning devices on the entire Forest Ranger Division motor vehicle fleet of trucks, UVs, boats, snowmobiles and ATVs.

•Will comply with and update DPAT and/or other equipment tracking systems as needed. Assist in coordinating auctioning surplus equipment.

•Will be responsible for purchasing all necessary supplies for the Saratoga Fire Cache which includes being responsible for a state issued purchase card and submitting purchase orders to budget for approval.

•Keeps a current inventory of and monitors wildland firefighting equipment and supplies stored in the Division's fleet of fire equipment trailers. Replaces equipment and supplies as necessary. Repairs division chainsaws and fire pumps, including motor repairs.

•Repairs and rebuilds fire equipment trailers. This requires a wide variety of carpentry skills and use of related equipment as well as metal fabrication skills including the use of welders, cutting torches and related equipment.

•Disassembles, repairs and rebuilds the gas powered motors and the pump heads of all portable and vehicle mounted motorized fire suppression pumps currently in use within the Division. Repairs division snowmobiles & ATVs in the Saratoga vicinity. Compiles and maintains required MSDS sheets for all chemicals used at the Saratoga Ranger support facility.

•Demonstrates proficiency with a variety of hand tools, portable power tools and shop equipment including welders, cutting torches, drills, drill presses, saws, planers, forklifts, tractors, front end loaders and all related equipment.

•Demonstrates the ability to complete all maintenance or repair work with little direct supervision.

•Directly supervises service repair mechanic assistant, permanent laborer and seasonal laborers as needed.

Minimum Qualifications Four years of experience as an automotive or diesel mechanic responsible for the diagnosis of faulty vehicle and/or equipment operation and the performance of mechanical repairs covering several aspects of automotive and/or diesel systems OR an associate's degree in automotive or diesel repair technology.

Substitution: Education as detailed below may be substituted for a maximum of two years of experience.

Graduation from a technical or vocational program, such as B.O.C.E.S, in automotive or diesel technology or automotive or diesel repair technology may be substituted for one year of experience.

Graduation from a one-year post high school certificate program in automotive or diesel repair technology may be substituted for up to two years of experience.

When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid New York State driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.

Additional Comments Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position.
Use of personal protection equipment, including a respirator, will be required.
Must be able to work in remote areas.
Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions.
